Hawthorne is a singer, songwriter, DJ, and producer who seamlessly meshes classic Motown sounds with more contemporary styles. He’s worked with Kendrick Lamar, Pharrell Williams, Snoop Dogg, and others and has released four studio albums and some EPs. His most recent project, Rare Changes, is a compilation of previously unreleased songs from his various archives, showing impressive range and flexibility.
Chulita Vinyl Club is a national network of female, non-binary, and gender non-conforming DJs who serve up all-genre, all-vinyl sets. Together, they create spaces that are both safe and fun for lovers of good music and, at the same time, celebrate the immense variety and color of their respective cultures and communities. The collective has chapters in several cities nationwide, including one in Charlotte. They browse YouTube and crate-dig local shops to find records you’ve never heard of before and are just as likely to haul out some soul as some cumbia. Shows featuring Chulita Vinyl Club are all about creating a welcoming and inclusive environment and dancing.
Mayer Hawthorne and Chulita Vinyl Club perform at The Underground – Charlotte, a small, cozy venue that presents live music and comedy.
